MIA Army Dog Found Over 1 Year Later

The black Labrador called Sabi went missing in action in southern Afghanistan, during the battle in which the SAS trooper Mark Donaldson won the Victoria Cross. Now Sabi has been reunited with her Australian unit. The Australian Defence Force says an American soldier spotted the dog last week. The 10-year-old female was trained to detect explosives like the roadside bombs used extensively by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. This was the dog's second tour of duty. Soldier spots dog He says the dog was recovered by a US soldier who can only be identified as John. The soldier was aware the Australians were missing an explosive detector dog. He says the soldier reportedly gave it some commands it understood. "When she did come back we were all overjoyed with what happened," he said.

The Bowlingual Voice, produced by Japanese toymaker Takara Tomy, is a talking gadget which analyses the acoustics of a dog's bark and translates the findings into human words. The gadget focuses on the detection of six emotions – including sadness, joy and frustration – alongside a recorded repertoire of spoken phrases such as "play with me". When the dog barks, the microphone records the sound and sends the data to the owner's hand-held device which then "translates" it into what the dog is apparently trying to say. A speech synthesizer audibly informs the owner of the dog's apparent intentions as well as appearing on the screen of the wireless hand-held unit. A new answering machine function can also record the dog's expressions of desire when owners are absent.

To this end, they have developed a live-attenuated vaccine which contains a weakened form of the rabies virus. The researchers said their vaccine could make global eradication of canine rabies feasible. They told PNAS: "Inappropriate dog vaccination programmes, limited access to vaccination and post-exposure treatment of individuals who have been exposed to rabid dogs are major problems in developing countries. clipped from www.examiner.com People more likely to quit smoking for their dogs than their children A recent study by researchers in Michigan turned up some interesting statistics.  It seems that one in three would quit smoking if they thought their pet would be adversely affected.  This is interesting because in other studies, fewer than 2% would quit smoking if they knew their children would suffer harmful effects and 3.2% would consider quitting under family pressure.  Clearly the pets win hands down..
