Handler never gave up on lost army dog

The handler of an army-trained labrador that went missing for more than a year says he never gave up hope for the lost dog.

The black Labrador called Sabi went missing in action in southern Afghanistan, during the battle in which the SAS trooper Mark Donaldson won the Victoria Cross.

Now Sabi has been reunited with her Australian unit. The Australian Defence Force says an American soldier spotted the dog last week.

The 10-year-old female was trained to detect explosives like the roadside bombs used extensively by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. This was the dog's second tour of duty.

Soldier spots dog

He says the dog was recovered by a US soldier who can only be identified as John. The soldier was aware the Australians were missing an explosive detector dog.

He says the soldier reportedly gave it some commands it understood.

"When she did come back we were all overjoyed with what happened," he said.

Japanese inventors have come up with a device they claim can detect a dog's emotion from its bark.

The Bowlingual Voice, produced by Japanese toymaker Takara Tomy, is a talking
gadget which analyses the acoustics of a dog's bark and translates the
findings into human words.

The gadget focuses on the detection of six emotions – including sadness, joy
and frustration – alongside a recorded repertoire of spoken phrases such as "play
with me".

When the dog barks, the microphone records the sound and sends the data to the
owner's hand-held device which then "translates" it into what the
dog is apparently trying to say.

A speech synthesizer audibly informs the owner of the dog's apparent
intentions as well as appearing on the screen of the wireless hand-held
unit. A new answering machine function can also record the dog's expressions
of desire when owners are absent.

New Rabies Vaccine Developed

A live-attenuated rabies virus vaccine is likely to provide effective immunisation with a single dose, which has practical, cost and logistical advantages over conventional multidose vaccines with respect to the worldwide eradication of dog rabies

Rabies kills around 55,000 people every year and although there are effective treatments for the disease, prevention is seen as the most desirable option.

Once symptoms appear it is almost always fatal, but people who contract rabies can be treated with a protracted course of antibodies and vaccinations to fight the virus after being bitten.

What is needed, say Milosz Faber and his team, is a potent vaccine that will offer lifelong protection in just one simple dose.

To this end, they have developed a live-attenuated vaccine which contains a weakened form of the rabies virus.

The researchers said their vaccine could make global eradication of canine rabies feasible.

They told PNAS: "Inappropriate dog vaccination programmes, limited access to vaccination and post-exposure treatment of individuals who have been exposed to rabid dogs are major problems in developing countries.

"The UK has officially rabies free status since 1922 and the EU's Pet Travel Scheme has helped keep this status.

A recent study by researchers in Michigan turned up some interesting statistics. It seems that one in three would quit smoking if they thought their pet would be adversely affected. This is interesting because in other studies, fewer than 2% would quit smoking if they knew their children would suffer harmful effects and 3.2% would consider quitting under family pressure. Clearly the pets win hands down..

These lucky pups have landed on their feet after two dogs decided to share out the motherly duties.

Pedigree Irish Setter Madyson gave birth to the 15 babies but before owner Julie Murray had a chance to clean the newborns, her other dog, Liliana, started to lend a hand.

And when the pups started feeding, six-year-old surrogate mum Liliana, an English Setter, also began producing milk so she could share the load.

"She started cleaning them and looking after them and soon after began producing milk even though she wasn't pregnant - I was amazed.

"Normally the natural mum is really protective over her pups but the pair share feeding times.

"It's good news for me too because if Liliana wasn't there I would have to help and bottle feed some of the puppies because 15 is too many for a mother to look after.

"I'm sure it helps deal with 15 puppies, which is quite an impressive litter."

Im sure dogs have a sense of humor, a dog played a joke at my house once. I have a beaded curtain on the kitchen door and Stig walked partway through but left a single strand of beads trailing between his ears an down off his snout. He stood looking at me there with this mr. goofy grin making the joke of a funny string of beads hanging down his face more obvious.

Golden Retriever Adopts 3 Abandoned Tiger Cubs at Kansas Zoo

adopted three tiger cubs abandoned by their mother.

Safari Zoological Park owner Tom Harvey said
the tiger cubs were born Sunday, but the mother had problems with them.

A day later, the mother stopped caring for
them. Harvey said the cubs were wandering around, trying to find their birth
mother, who wouldn't pay attention to them. That's when the cubs were put in the
care of a golden retriever, Harvey said.

Harvey said it's unusual for dogs to care for tiger cubs, but it does happen. He
said he has seen reports of pigs nursing cubs in China, and he actually got the
golden retriever after his wife saw television accounts of dogs caring for tiger
cubs.

Puppies take about the same amount of time as tiger cubs to develop, and Harvey said the adoptive mother just recently weaned her own puppies.

"The timing couldn't have been any better," he said.
